Didier William is a Haitian-American mixed media painter and printmaker who came to the States when he was 6 years old.

Intertwining Haitian mythology and his personal experiences, including that of being a gay Caribbean man, his art explores the universal questions of belonging and identity in a most unique and compelling way.

William’s layered and intricately detailed work calls upon elements of printmaking, carving, and mixed media painting. “Printmaking is three-dimensional and I see the paintings that result from my process as low-relief sculptures, with different layers being forced into tension,” he says.

There is also an intriguing tension in the way William creates his forms - at first glance monumental and suspended in time, they are comprised of a myriad of seemingly moving parts, thus being simultaneously in a state of constant motion and absolute stillness. I have no idea if he intended this, but I absolutely love it.
