THE ART MUSEUM OF GEORGIA (Shalva Amiranashvili Museum of Fine Arts), Tbilisi. Levan Lagidze: A Retrospective, until 18 August, 2024
LEVAN LAGIDZE seeks to share experiences in harmony and gratitude, looking at the world from a great height where “all elements are equally important and every detail contains within itself an expression of the whole.” (Levan Lagidze)
With blocks of colour both in the forefront and hidden within the texture of his artworks, Lagidze looks playfully beneath the surface - beneath the stories that we tell ourselves, into a greater truth. His art allows for endless discoveries, revealing news depths over time.
“For him painting is a form of gaining a greater awareness ... looking at his paintings, you desire time in quiet contemplation.” (Maka Bezhuashvili, Curator, the National Gallery, Georgian National Museum)
Lagidze (b. 1958, Tbilisi, Georgia), is a graduate of the prestigious Tbilisi State Art Academy and is a national treasure in his country, where he lives and works. His art is collected by major museums worldwide. In 2022 The British Museum Library acquired a volume of his retrospective, “Untitled”, and in 2024 the national Shalva Amiranashvili Museum of Fine Arts in Tbilisi, Georgia, showcased a retrospective of over 250 of his artworks.
