Landscape and Memory

Phil Greenwood, Hawsfoot, etching

Nature holds a special place in my heart and so it was that the work of Welsh printmaker and landscape artist Phil Greenwood instantly spoke to me. Greenwood transforms memories of landscapes into enchantingly intimate etchings.

Somewhat akin to Chinese literati (scholar-painters), Greenwood’s images do not depict a specific place but instead are recollections of places or amalgamations of several places recalled. The main focus is on capturing the feeling of the landscape.

I love the palpable power of the elements in End of Day above and the freedom in the sheer expanse of blue in Blue Cotton below. Somehow Greenwood takes us inside his memories, as if we too gazed at the last shower of sunrays through the clouds at dusk, sat in the dandelion meadows, or witnessed the sudden burst of hawksfoot in the wind.
