Chen Li’s work is now part of the British Museum permanent collection. His reduction woodblock print Human Buddha will go on display in the China and South Asia Gallery starting June 2019.
The award-winning woodblock prints were a hit at the London Art Fair, with both the Fair and Artsy picking Chen Li’s work as one of the lead images for the Projects section, and lots of welcome interest from visitors. RARE TECHNIQUE
Chen Li uses a rare woodblock printing technique, called "reduction" or "waste-block" printing, perfected in China’s frontier Yunnan Province. The process involves printing all of the colours from a single woodblock, each step carving over the previous one until the woodblock itself is destroyed. Also dubbed the "suicide technique", this method leaves no room for error. Only a single edition can be printed because the process cannot be repeated. The technique uses thick oil-based inks, creating relief-prints with a mesmerising texture.
Chen Li was born in 1971 in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province, where he lives and works.
LEVAN LAGIDZE: LONDON 2018 | NEW YORK 2019
Our November 2018 London show, "LEVAN LAGIDZE | Bach Exercises", was a major exhibition by one of Georgia’s greatest and most reclusive painters, who returned to London for the first time in 20 years. Showing the only works available on the primary market, the exhibition brought excitement and acclaim that resonated in both countries. The show is 85% sold but three works are still available … for now.
Both Lagidze and his art are deep, vibrant, and irresistible. The 3 minute video above says it all and is bound to make you smile.
In November 2019 we will take the show to New York, with all new works created specifically for that exhibition. Stay tuned for more news.
