GAO XIANG: INTERROGATING DREAMS

SOLO SHOW

LONDON

30 OCTOBER - 4 NOVEMBER

One week only

KATRINE LEVIN GALLERIES

AT THE CONINGSBY GALLERY

30 TOTTENHAM STREET, LONDON, W1T 4RJ

First ever U.K. show by internationally acclaimed Chinese artist, Gao Xiang. Meet the artist and see his works.

Gao Xiang’s paintings, inks on paper, silk prints, and installations are an examination of the human spirit, felt in the timelessness of his landscapes and the imagery of animals, especially that of the horse.  For Gao Xiang, the horse is a complex force that not only holds the mysteries of the universe and Chinese traditions, but is a symbolic extension of his soul.

Gao Xiang's poetic works are steeped in Chinese traditions and mythology, balancing between dreams and reality, abstract and figurative.

His acrylic glass installations follow the theme of his paintings and works on paper while exploring the 17th century Chinese landscaping concept of "borrowed scenery".  The transparency of the glass transforms the installation depending on the colour and texture of the background.

About Gao Xiang

Gao Xiang was born in 1971 in Kunming, the capital of China’s Yunnan Province. He holds a Ph.D. from the prestigious China Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing, and splits his time between studios in Kunming and Beijing.

Gao Xiang's works are collected by museums in Asia and Europe; his installations have been commissioned for public spaces from China to Paris; and he has been widely exhibited by galleries and museums in Asia and internationally, including France and the United States.  This is his first exhibition in the U.K.

THE ARTISTS AND THEIR LAND

A short film introducing the Visionaries of Yunnan, a series of exhibitions of works by exceptional artists from China's Yunnan Province, brought to London by Katrine Levin Galleries. Exhibitions begin this June 2017 with a solo show by Chen Li, followed in November 2017 by the works of Gao Xiang and Wu Jun.

CLIPS OF CHEN LI AND GAO XIANG, MADE FOR BBC TWO

Video made for BBC2 when Chen Li's work was shortlisted for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2017. In Chinese. Translation:

My name is Chen Li, I live in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province. I am inspired by the stunning landscape of Yunnan and the traditional Chinese culture and Buddhist philosophy. I learned a lot from my father, a famous artist here, but also had to fight hard to find my own voice.  That is why I isolate myself from the artistic community - to retain it.

I am thrilled to have the Human Buddha shortlisted for the Summer Exhibition.  I paint works from the Buddha series as a spiritual rejuvenation between painting abstracted landscapes. The Buddha paintings teach me that I need to give up something to create something new.

I am represented by Katrine Levin Galleries who will do my first solo show in London this June. Katrine suggested that I submit my work to the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. I am so glad I did and nervous and excited about the results in May!
